Phonics at St Peter’s

At St Peter’s, we follow the Red Rose Phonics programme developed by Lancashire to teach early reading skills. This systematic, synthetic phonics approach ensures that children build strong foundations in decoding and blending sounds from the very start of their learning journey. All practitioners are fully trained in delivering Red Rose Phonics, and our reading books are carefully matched to each phonics phase to support progression. Through engaging lessons and consistent practice, we aim to develop confident, fluent readers who enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning.

Reading at St Peter’s

At St Peter’s Church of England Primary School, reading is at the heart of our curriculum. From their earliest experiences in EYFS, children develop a love of reading that stays with them throughout their school journey.

EYFS and Key Stage 1

In EYFS and KS1, phonics is taught daily by practitioners trained in delivering Red Rose Phonics. Our reading books have been carefully updated to match our synthetic phonics programme and are organised by phonics phases.

Children take home books linked to their learning in school, as well as an additional book to share with parents or guardians, because we believe fostering a love of reading begins at home. Pupils also have access to our recently refurbished Key Stage 1 library, offering a variety of books to enjoy and share.

Every child is provided with a reading record, and we encourage parents to record home reading. Reading bags should be brought to school every day to support regular practice and progress.
